UFO - Universal File Operator - Product information
UFO 96 - Universal File Operator
by Deus Ex Machina Communications <ASP-Member>
#1503█ Are you undecided if you should install Windows 95 or you
#1503█ have already installed it?
#0003How would you like a file manager which provides the comfort
of long filenames in Windows 95 but which can be used as fast
as a DOS program; a file manager which has the Windows 95
Start Menu integrated but which still runs in a DOS box.
#1503█ You are surfing the Net or visiting BBSs?
#0003In this case a file manager which automatically displays the
"file_id.diz" info files in archives is made for you. You
need a file manager which treats archives like subdirectories
and which supports the four most important archiver programs
(ARJ, PkZip, LHArc, and RAR). Your file manager has to allow
you to view and modify files directly in archives. An
intergrated UUencoder/decoder would be very helpful when
sending data through the Internet.
#1503█ You have to do much file organisation and you need fast
#1503█ and solid file management functions?
#0003We have for you a file manager which provides time
estimations during the copying of files, which calculates
the size of subdirectories in the background, which provides
a skilled FileFind and which searches for all necessary
archiver programs and installed application by itself.
#1503█ Security has the highest priority for you?
#0003Your file manager should keep a logfile, it should warn you
if programs residently stay in the memory, if you want it it
should delete files irrevocably so that they cannot be
restored. A display of remaining laptop battery energy can
revent bad surprises.
#1503█ Or do you just need a reliable file manager?
#0003For you we have developed UFO 96, the DOS file manager which
supports
Windows 95. The change to UFO 96 is easy; you will regain
standards in UFO 96 to which you are used to from other
products.
#1503█ Additional functions
#0003SAA concurring multifile editor, System info tool ("PC
Equipment"), extensive Online Help, Drag & Drop, Display of
file infos at HTML, WAV, GIF, PCX, BMP, MOD, and S3M-files.
#1503█ Support
#0003Via Fax, CompuServe mail, Internet E-Mail, FidoNet, and
numerous support BBSs.

Defective Archive
The archive could not be read. Check out if
■ ...the archive is actually defective. Is the archiver
itself capable of processing the archive?
■ ...the drive of the temp directory is neither full nor
write protected.
■ ...the archiver you use is available and functionable.
If you made sure that all these error causing conditions
are not present and the error still occurs, please
contact the authors (how to do that you can learn from
the file SUPPORT.TXT).

extracting and compressing files automatically.
If you want to ADD some you can do that for each archiver
in this dialogue.

Search for archivers
Choose this button to make UFO search for the supported
archivers on all available hard drives.
In detail UFO searches for:
■ ARJ.EXE

■ RAR.EXE
UFO cancels the search when all archivers are found or

You get the error message if you have not (yet) entered
in which directory UFO can find the required archiver.
Choose #1403Yes#0003 to configure the archiver(s) now.
If you do not configure the archivers you can neither

AutoInstall
AutoInstall helps at the installation of new software.
It searches on all replaceable devices (discs and
CD-ROMs) for programs named SETUP.EXE or INSTALL.EXE
or something like that.
A command line including that program is offered and
all you have to do is press <RETURN> to execute the
installation program.

Create list file
At "Name of list file" you enter the filename in which
UFO is to write all located files.
The text fields "Text before/behind filename" are of
special interest if you want to use the list file
as a batch.
Therefore the list file's extension must be "BAT". At
"Text before filename" you could enter e.g. the dos
command "type" to display all files in the list.
At "Text behind filename" the option "| more" could be
useful to make "type" display the files pagewise.

Directory tree
A directory tree displays the different levels of the
directories on the current drive so that you can get an
idea of how your directory structure looks like.
You can navigate through the tree by the usual keys, just
as in a file list.
In the opposite window the directory is adapted to the
directory in the tree.
You can navigate through the tree by the PLUS- and the
MINUS-key on the numblock:
Press PLUS to access the next directory on the same level.
Press MINUS to reach the previous directory in the same
level. The #1403quicksearch#0003 does also work on the
directory tree.

Windows 95 Display
With this mode active you get two columns in each window:
One for the long filenames and another for their size.
This mode goes without displaying the date and time
attributes to save more space for the name string.
The alternative is the #1403Full Display#0003 and the
#1403Brief Display#0003.

UU-encode file...
This command encodes virtually every file into the
UU-format which allows file tarnsfer by e-mail through
the Internet. UU-encoded files can also be distributed
in Usenet-usegroups.
An UU-encoded file can be decoded by the
#1403"Tools|UU-decode file"#0003 command
#1504HINT:#0003 If you want to send multiple files or
very huge files it is strongly recommended that you
use an archiver program (F11) before encoding by
UUencode.
_\
_5000
UU-decode file... (Shift-F12)
This command decodes a file which has been created by
#1403UUencode#0003. You can find such files in the
Internet (Usenet, e-mail)
#1504HINT:#0003 These files are often archived by an
archiver program in order to save transfer time.
_\
_5001
Windows 95 must be active
This command requires Windows 95 - DOS 7.0 is not
enough.
_\
_5002
No files found to be UU-decode

unknown or the files is damaged.
_\
_5003

opportunity to enter an alternative file name.

is because this happens unintended in most cases and
unnecessarily wastes memory.

_5008
Save selection
With this button activated UFO remembers which files
are selected when an external program is called. In
order to do that the names of the selected files are
temporarily written to a file. Because of this function
may cause a reduction of speed on slow computers this
function is optional.
_\
_5009
Use UFO-TSRWatch
With this function activated UFO warns you if it is
possible that a program remains in memory. Viruses may
be decloaked this way. TSRWatch may cause a false alarm
thats why you can deactivate it.
There is a more detailed destricption of the UFO-TSRWatch
in chapter 5.6 of the UFO documentation (UFO.DOC).

Always delete irrevocably
If this function is activated files are not just deleted
(so that e.g. Undelete is able to recover them) - they
are overwritten multiple times. In addition to that the
corresponding area of the data carrier is physically
cleaned afterwards.
This function does not only refer to deleting by F8.
Also when moving files from drive to drive (by F6) these
files will be irrevocably deleted on the source drive.
Even the UFO temp-files are deleted in this way. This may
slow down UFO.
#1504HINT:#0003 Press Ctrl-F8 instead of F8 and deactivate
this switch if you want to delete the current selection
of files by way of exception.
